Topic 2- Iran with Nuclear Weapons (November 9th, 2011)
As the U.S. prepares to remove its troops from Iraq, and is on schedule to draw down its troops in Pakistan, Iran is poised to become the most influential country in the region. Hostile to the U.S. and an alleged sponsor of terror, Iran has been researching nuclear technology in pursuit of developing nuclear energy. This week the International Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations has determined that Iran will be capable of producing nuclear weapons in a very short time. What do you think about that? What do your parents think?
Does Iran pose a danger to the U.S. ? Are there other countries that would feel particularly threatened by a nuclear armed Iran? What about allegations that North Korea and Pakistan helped Iran develop the weapons technology? Should the U.S. take action alone or in partnership with allies? Should any action be military, economic, or political? Should we negotiate with Iran? Is Iran or any other country that has the ability to develop nuclear weapons entitled to do so?
Should the U.S. not focus on Iran, but work to eliminate nuclear weapons globally- including dismantling its own?
This discussion will run until Tuesday, November 15th.
